The Accra West Region of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has surcharged producers of Leyland Paint, Chemicals Co (GH) Ltd. BBC an amount of ¢206,302 for illegal water connection.

An inspection on Tuesday by a team of officers from the Ghana Water Company revealed that the company, Chemicals Co (GH) Ltd. BBC, had been drawing water from the national pipelines since 2019 without making any payment to the state.

Speaking with JoyNews, Communications Manager for GWCL, Accra West Region, Solace Akomeah, said a 48hour ultimatum has been given to the company to settle the amount and regularize their connection to the national pipelines.

“This morning, when we went there, they didn’t want to allow us to enter the premises, but we had a police escort who helped open the gate for us, and that’s how we were able to get inside. So all the details are there to confirm that they are involved in an illegal connection.”

“Currently, we have delivered a letter surcharging them for the illegal use of water, and we’ve given them 48 hours to settle the bill that we have given to them, and we are also disconnecting the lines. So what we’ve told them to do is to come to our offices to regularize the connection,” she told JoyNews.

However, a representative from Chemicals Co (GH) Ltd. BBC said the allegations that the company was using water for all its systems are false.

“What is going on right now, the picture that is being portrayed is a wrong picture. All these tanks that you see are not for storage of water; they are for storage of white spirit and diesel because we produce chemicals… The kind of picture that they are portraying here that we use water for all these tanks here is false,” he said.
