Health facilities in the Ashanti Region have been applauded for opening up their doors for clinical training of students pursuing various programmes at the College of Health Sciences, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

Professor Christian Agyare, Provost of the College, said currently, about 2,000 students were undergoing clinical training at these facilities, which served as teaching sites for the College.

The authorities, he said, valued the existing partnership given the relevance of clinical training in the professional development of medical, nursing and pharmaceutical students.

According to him, the College had resolved to provide the requisite technical and material aid to the facilities to help meet their needs for their mutual benefits.

Prof Agyare gave the assurance when the College donated some personal protective equipment (PPEs) to 22 health facilities in the Region, at a ceremony in Kumasi.

The items comprised 124 gallons of sanitizers, 200 boxes of non-surgical gloves, 203 boxes of caps, 235 boxes of masks, 190 boxes of N95 masks and 245 boxes of surgical gloves.

Prof Agyare said the gesture was meant to supplement the personal protective items at the beneficiary health facilities to enhance their work, especially in the era of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He indicated that the College was expecting to admit more students to pursue its various programmes in the coming years.

Consequently, the authorities would rely on these teaching sites in nurturing the students as they got exposed to the practical aspect of their academic work, the Provost stated.

Mr Dominic Kofi Osei, General Manager, HopeXchange Medical Centre, one of the beneficiary health facilities, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), on the sidelines of the programme, lauded the University for coming to their aid.

“We need more of such supplies for the protection and safety of the staff and students alike since the country is not yet out of the woods in respect of the pandemic,” he observed.

Other facilities benefitting from the College’s gesture included the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Asokwa Children’s Hospital, KNUST Hospital, Pramso Hospital, Juaben Government Hospital, Emena Hospital, VSD Clinic, Amakom, and Wiamoase Government Hospital.
