NPP Manifesto Launch: Bawumia pledges modern stadium for Sunyani and six new regions

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has announced plans to construct a state-of-the-art stadium in Sunyani, alongside new stadiums in the six newly created regions of Ghana.

Speaking at the NPP’s manifesto launch in Takoradi on Sunday, Dr. Bawumia highlighted Sunyani’s rich football culture, being home to traditional clubs like BA United and Bofoakwa Tano, as a key reason for prioritizing the city in his sports infrastructure agenda.

“We will build six new stadiums in the six new regions, and a standard stadium in Sunyani, recognizing their passion for football and the numerous clubs based there,” Dr. Bawumia stated while outlining his sports policies.

He also emphasized his commitment to expanding sports infrastructure nationwide, building on the existing projects initiated by the Akufo-Addo administration, including the extension of astro turfs to every constituency.

Addressing concerns about the upkeep of sports facilities, Dr. Bawumia assured that his government would implement an effective maintenance strategy to ensure that newly constructed facilities are well-maintained.

For sustainable sports funding, Dr. Bawumia proposed the establishment of a Sports Development Fund and the introduction of tax incentives to encourage corporate investment in sports. He also mentioned plans for tax reductions aimed at enhancing the commercial viability of sports entities.

In support of Ghana’s Premier League, Dr. Bawumia promised direct financial assistance to clubs through policies directed by the National Lotteries Authority and the Gaming Commission, helping to offset operational expenses, including player salaries.

Additionally, Dr. Bawumia revealed plans to establish a School Sports Secretariat as part of the Ministry responsible for sports, to promote grassroots sports development through schools in partnership with the Ghana Education Service and sports federations.
