In a startling turn of events, George Afriyie, former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has been disqualified from the forthcoming GFA presidential election, as confirmed by the Vetting Committee.

Afriyie now has a three-day window to challenge the decision of the Elections Committee before the GFA Appeals Committee.

The much-anticipated election, originally scheduled for September 27 in Tamale, also faces potential postponement due to ongoing legal proceedings.

The Vetting Committee’s determination, conveyed to Afriyie in an e-mail, centered on his failure to meet the stipulated criteria outlined in “Article 13(2)(j) of the Ghana Football Association statutes, 2019.” Additionally, he fell short in garnering the necessary support from fellow Ghana Football Association members for his candidacy.

In an exhaustive statement, the Committee elucidated the grounds for Afriyie’s disqualification, providing him with a brief three-day period to contest this judgment.

The Committee established that Jeffrey Asare, one of the five individuals endorsing his application on the nomination form as a Director of Victory Club Warriors FC, was neither an authorized signatory for the Club nor a company director.

“For the position of GFA President, you were required to state one GFA Member proposing your Candidature and five (5) GFA Members supporting it per the GFA Statutes 2019. We therefore conclude that your endorsement by Jeffrey Asare is invalid. Due to the above invalidity, your nomination form currently has four (4) GFA Members supporting you,” the Committee conveyed in an email to Afriyie.

“In light of this, you do not meet the requirements to contest the election for the position of President of the GFA.”
