Achimota Squash Club secures victory against Takoradi rivals

Achimota Squash Club, Ghana’s rapidly ascending force in the sport, continued its winning streak with a resounding victory over the Airforce Officers’ Mess (AFOM) Squash Club from Takoradi.

In the highly anticipated SONO Squash Invitational Friendly, Achimota Squash Club exhibited their prowess, clinching a 5-2 victory against their counterparts at the AFOM Squash Club court in Takoradi, Western Region, on Saturday, October 7, 2023.

Among the standout players were Mark Owiredu-Gyening Jr. and Clement Anafo, both distinguished participants in the 2022 Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham, UK, proudly representing Ghana.

A highlight of the match was the stellar performance of Achimota Squash Club’s standout player, Portia Gana, who outplayed her confident opponent, John Amu Mawuko from AFOM Squash Club, Takoradi.

Portia, an inspirational figure for female squash enthusiasts in Ghana, exemplifies the inclusivity championed by Achimota Squash Club, breaking barriers in a sport traditionally dominated by men.

Achimota Squash Club is committed to nurturing talent in both boys and girls, striving to make squash an all-inclusive sport, thereby bolstering Ghana’s prospects in future competitions.

The club is renowned for organizing invitational friendlies and open tournaments nationwide, fostering camaraderie and healthy competition within the sport.

In a plea to the corporate sector, Achimota Squash Club urges corporate Ghana to offer their support, both in monetary contributions and in kind, underscoring the myriad health and economic benefits that extend beyond mere entertainment.

The successful staging of the SONO Squash Invitational Friendly was made possible through the generous support of the Eastfield Foundation, ANKAA Tropical Oranges, Aqua Blue Mineral Water, and Socialite.

The eagerly awaited next installment of the SONO Ghana Squash Invitational Friendly is slated for December.
