Ghana Premier League loses headline sponsorship

Sports betting firm betPawa has decided to step down from its role as the headline sponsor of the Ghana Premier League, citing a collaborative decision with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to refocus their partnership efforts.

The company expressed its commitment to enhancing player welfare by redirecting its efforts toward providing direct benefits to the footballers. 

In an official statement today following weeks of speculation about the fate of the sponsorship, betPawa outlined its new approach, which includes increasing the locker room bonus for players to GHC 400 from GHS150.

The decision to withdraw as the headline sponsor comes just one year after betPawa signed a three-year contract in August 2022, committing to a total investment of $6 million, with an annual contribution of $2 million dedicated to promoting the league. The betting company quickly became the league’s headline sponsor, ending a prolonged period without such sponsorship.

Under the new partnership framework, betPawa pledged to finalize the construction of the betPawa pitch at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram, emphasizing its dedication to infrastructure development. 

The company stated, “Per our new partnership, we will be revising the betPawa Locker Room Bonus payment to the players from GHC 150 to 400 for every match their team wins.”

betPawa assured the sporting community of its ongoing collaboration with the GFA and reiterated its sustained efforts to contribute to the development and improvement of football standards in Ghana. 

The company expressed gratitude to the GFA for their enduring partnership and confirmed their commitment to implementing an enhanced Locker Room Bonus for footballers.
