NABDAM Constituency Communications Officer Discusses Impact of Campaign Promises on NDC Loss

Reported by Ngresangma Martha – 13/03/2024

In a revealing interview on AIT TV, James Tenga, a communications officer for the NABDAM constituency, dissected the factors behind the National Democratic Congress (NDC) defeat in the recent elections. Tenga attributed the party’s loss to a glaring disparity between campaign pledges and actual outcomes.

Tenga recounted the 2016 election campaign, where promises of transformative change resonated with voters nationwide. Candidates pledged to address widespread hardships faced by various sectors, including drivers, teachers, nurses, and market women. However, Tenga emphasized that these promises often failed to materialize, leading to disillusionment among the electorate.

The interview highlighted specific pledges made during the campaign, such as the ambitious promise of allocating $1 million to each constituency and the commitment to transform Accra into the cleanest city within 100 days of assuming office. Additionally, candidates vowed to implement initiatives like one district one factory and one village one dam, promising to alleviate water shortages across the country.

Tenga drew attention to the economic indicators that have worsened since the change in leadership. He noted that inflation, which stood at 15% under the previous administration, has surged to 23.5%. Furthermore, he underscored the depreciation of the local currency, citing an alarming increase from 4 cedis to the dollar to approximately 13.1 cedis to the dollar.

The interview resonated with viewers, sparking discussions about the impact of campaign rhetoric on voter perceptions and the accountability of political leaders. Tenga’s insights underscored the importance of bridging the gap between promises made on the campaign trail and tangible results delivered in office.

As the country reflects on the recent election outcome, Tenga’s analysis serves as a reminder of the electorate’s demand for substantive change and the consequences of unfulfilled promises in the political landscape.
