GPRTU & GRTCC Urging Commuters to Disregard New Fare Increments.

Reports by Victoria Anima Akomea- 14/04/2024

The Ghana Private Roads and Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have issued a joint statement urging commuters to disregard recently proposed transport fare increments by certain transport unions. The GPRTU and GRTCC have deemed these increases illegal and arbitrary, citing a violation of the country’s administrative regulations regarding public transport fare adjustments.

The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana and the Transport Operators Union of Ghana announced a 20% hike in transport fares in response to economic challenges and fuel price escalations. However, the GPRTU and GRTCC assert that while they recognize the validity of these concerns, the unilateral action taken by these unions contradicts established protocols for adjusting public transport fares.

In their statement, the GPRTU and GRTCC emphasized that the fare increment directly contravenes the country’s administrative instrument governing the review and adjustment of public transport fares. This underscores the illegality of the proposed fare increases and highlights the need for adherence to established procedures.

Acknowledging the impact of rising fuel prices on transport operations, the GPRTU and GRTCC have initiated discussions with stakeholders and the Ministry of Transport to address the various cost components involved in the transportation sector. These ongoing engagements aim to find a mutually agreeable solution to the challenges faced by transport operators and commuters alike.

While negotiations are underway, the GPRTU and GRTCC have advised commuters to disregard any unauthorized fare increments and treat them with contempt. They have assured the public that once a consensus is reached through the consultation process, appropriate announcements will be made to inform commuters of any approved adjustments in transport fares.

Furthermore, the unions have reaffirmed their commitment to advocating for the interests of drivers in the ongoing discussions with the government. They have urged drivers to comply with the directive to ignore unauthorized fare increments and assured them that their concerns will continue to be prioritized in the deliberations with relevant authorities.

In conclusion, the joint statement issued by the GPRTU and GRTCC underscores the importance of adhering to legal regulations and established procedures in determining public transport fares. It highlights ongoing efforts to address the challenges facing the transportation sector through constructive engagements with stakeholders and government agencies. Commuters are advised to remain vigilant and await official announcements regarding any changes in transport fares, while drivers are assured of ongoing representation of their interests in the ongoing discussions.
