However, all three universities have made it to the quarter-final stage of the national championship of the TBSC to be held in the Greater Accra Region.

The TBSC version 5.0 is being sponsored by MTN Ghana, CompuGhana, Accra Brewery Limited, PwC, Goil Ghana, Cal Bank, McVities and Glico Life, among others.

The event, with technical support from the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG), Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIMA), Graphic Business, Graphic Online, TV3, Asaase Radio and KTU Radio, was on the theme: “Preparation Ahead of Opportunity; Business as a way of Life”.

Relevant & accepted

The programme, which has become one of the most relevant and accepted competitions among tertiary business schools in the country, is meant to engender healthy competition among the various tertiary business schools across the country.

It is also to keep students abreast of developments within the business sector, and the economy as a whole, to enable students to make informed decisions in the sector shortly.

In the competition, UEW initially led the contest in the first round with 21 points, followed by UCC with 16 points, while KTU managed just five points.

In the second round, UCC took over leadership with a score of 22 points, followed by the UEW, which had 16 and KTU scoring just three points.

The UEW scored eight points in round three, while UCC scored four points and KTU only managed to score three points respectively.

UCC took the lead position in round four with 16 points, followed by UEW with 15 points while KTU had just one point.

In the fifth round, UCC had 12 points followed by the University of Education, Winneba with 11 points, while KTU had four points.

In the sixth round, which was the final, UCC scored nine points, UEW  had four points and KTU scored zero.

Teams

The UCC was represented by Nana Yaw Asarefori Duah, Fatawu Abubakar and Godson Nkunu, while UEW was represented by Simon Ahlidza, James Nana Ofori and Success Fiadufe Defor.

Samuel Teye Ayiku and Ebenezer Mensah held sway for Koforidua Technical University.

Business acumen

The Zonal Manager for Eastern/Volta Regions of the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL), Benjamin Tsatsu Korsinah, said the objective of the competition was to inculcate into students business acumen to prepare them for the future after graduation.

He was happy that the students were well prepared for the competition, and that was in line with what GCGL had envisioned to fine-tune the students in business.

Practicals

Mr Korsinah was hopeful that what the students had learnt in the classroom would be linked to the practical world of business.

A Senior Lecturer at the UCC School of Business, Dr Edward Amarteefio, said he was not surprised about UCC winning the competition because it had been at the finals four times and won twice.

He congratulated all the participants on the good work done.

Automatic qualification

The Quiz Master of the competition, Alhassan Yusif Trawule, said all three universities that participated in the competition had automatically qualified to represent the middle zone at the national level for the ultimate.

According to him, the platform given to students was to teach them teamwork skills, as well as presentation skills, to help them build up their confidence to become better people in life.

Some of the students said the competition would enable them to get good grades in Accounting and other business-related programmes, as well as position them on how best to engage in business after graduation.

Samuel Teye Ayiku from KTU told the Daily Graphic that he was not happy about their performance and attributed that to their first time taking part in the competition.

He also said that KTU was informed late last Thursday night before the Friday of the competition, which affected them in terms of adequate preparations.
