2023 FIFA WWC: Nigeria stun host Australia with second-half salvo

Goals from Uchenna Kanu, Osinachi Ohale, and Asisat Oshoala secured Nigeria a surprise 3-2 win over FIFA Women’s World Cup co-hosts Australia, who now sit in third place of Group B with one game left to play.

Australia’s World Cup dream suffered that heavy blow in Brisbane Stadium as Nigeria hit back from trailing 1-0 to complete a merited 3-2 win in Group B on Thursday, July 27.

The co-hosts needed a win to qualify for the last 16 on Thursday but will need to overcome Canada in Melbourne on Monday, July 31, to stay alive in the tournament.

The Matildas took the lead courtesy of Emily van Egmond’s fine finish in added time in the first half – against a compact, energized and well-constructed Nigeria side but Uchenna Kanu equalized seconds later.

Coach Randy Waldrum’s Nigeria proceeded to produce a classic counter-attacking game in the second half as further goals from Osinachi Ohale and substitute Asisat Oshoala stunned the about 50,000 home fans inside the Brisbane Stadium.

Ohale, who won the Woman of the Match award, was a tower of strength in organising and cajoling her companions to keep the Australian attack in check. The defender always seemed to be in the right place to deal with any danger.

How the Nigerians lined up

Asisat Oshoala showed her class in the forward areas when she emerged as a substitute in the second half, but it was the defensive organisation of Ohale and her teammates that provided the foundations for Nigeria to claim a famous win.

Alanna Kennedy headed home to pull one back, but it was not enough as Nigeria held on to the lead to move top of the table on goal difference above Canada who are on four points with Australia remaining on three points.,

A jubilant Nigeria – who drew 0-0 with Canada in their opening match are now sure to qualify for the last 16 with a win over already eliminated Republic of Ireland in the final group match on Monday.
