CAS overturns GFA’s penalties in Inter Allies-AshantiGold matchfixing case

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has nullified all penalties imposed by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) on the players allegedly involved in a match-fixing incident between Inter Allies and AshantiGold SC.

The Disciplinary Committee of the GFA had taken action against 21 players, finding them guilty of manipulating the outcome of a Ghana Premier League game on match day 34, which occurred two seasons ago.

Subsequently, the Professional Football Association of Ghana (PFAG) lodged an appeal with CAS through the International Federation of Professional Footballers (FIFPro) to overturn the GFA’s decision.

During the appeal process, CAS granted the players permission to register for the 2022/23 season, enabling them to participate in competitive football while the case was under consideration.

After a prolonged period of deliberation, CAS has now rendered its verdict, overturning all sanctions previously imposed on the players by the GFA.

As a part of the ruling, the Ghana FA has been directed to compensate the affected players with a total of $7,357, with each player set to receive $345.77 in compensation.

This decision marks a significant turn of events in the match-fixing case, offering the players an opportunity to resume their football careers without the burden of previous sanctions.
