Background

The Volta River Authority (VRA) on September 16, 2023, started controlling the Akosombo Dam due to excess water in the reservoir caused by significant levels of rainfall.

According to VRA, dam spillage occurs when water in the reservoir reaches its safe operating level, necessitating the release of water from the reservoir to make room to accommodate incoming flows.

Following this action, thousands of people in North Tongu, South Tongu, and other areas in the Volta Region have been affected by the dam spillage, resulting in submerged houses, business disruption, disrupted electricity supply, and other catastrophes.
