Corporate Ghana fails to understand the business of gospel music – Kofi Donkor

Artiste Manager Kofi Donkor has asserted that corporate organisations are yet to understand the business aspect of sponsoring gospel events in Ghana.

He posited that although gospel artistes present solid sponsorship proposals, corporate organisations often fail to recognise the business potential within the gospel space.

Speaking as a panelist on Graphic Showbiz’s X Dialogue Series on the topic, “Making Gospel Events Attractive to Corporate Sponsorhip”, he expressed frustrations over the recurring difficulty in obtaining sponsorship for gospel events, attributing it to a fundamental misunderstanding on the part of corporate entities.

Kofi Donkor explained that he was always at a loss as to what could be the problem considering that they (gospel music players) meet up all the necessary requirements including writing good proposals.

“From where I sit, year in year out, we go through difficulty getting sponsorship. Corporate Ghana does not understand the entertainment industry. You can go with all the numbers and everything to back, and they are just reluctant to sponsor.

“Almost every weekend, there’s one huge gospel concert or the other. It is just that corporate Ghana is yet to understand gospel events and showbiz, and that’s why we keep having these sponsorship issues,” he emphasised.

Expressing his disappointment, Kofi Donkor highlighted the unequal treatment of secular and gospel acts by corporate sponsors.

He noted that secular artistes often received substantial financial support, while gospel acts faced reluctance and are offered comparatively meager amounts.

“You go with your counterpart secular artistes, and they get hundreds of thousands of cedis, and you’re given 12,000 cedis, thinking they have given you a fortune,” he added.
