BY PEARL AMOAKO – 14/02/2024

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly recently held its inauguration ceremony for the Assembly Members and Government Appointees, as reported by Hon. Theophilus Quaye, the Chorkor Assembly Member.

Under the chairmanship of the Coordinating Director of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, the event witnessed a commendable turnout of elected members and appointees. Unfortunately, one individual was disqualified due to a violation of the legislative instrument. However, Hon. Dr. Alfred Oko Vanderpui honored the occasion as required by the house’s regulations.

The assembly comprised 15 elected members from the National Democratic Congress and 5 from the New Patriotic Party, while an additional 10 members were appointed by the government.

Moving forward, the election for the Presiding Member of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly took center stage. Notably, the process involved the participation of traditional authorities and the office of the president, with the honorable presence of Hon. Kwabena Bartels, former Minister of Housing.

The swearing-in ceremony was conducted by former Chief Justice, Hon. Theodora Georgina Woods, adding a sense of dignity to the proceedings. However, the election for the Presiding Member was declared null and void due to the failure to meet the required percentage. With 12 votes in favor and 17 votes against, a second round of the election will be conducted.
