Medical Doctors at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Declare Indefinite Strike Over Housing Dispute

Report by Apeke Rosemary-14/03/2024

In a bold move aimed at addressing their housing grievances, medical doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) have declared an indefinite strike, throwing the healthcare sector in Kumasi into uncertainty.

The decision, announced by the hospital’s medical staff, comes in response to a pressing issue concerning their residency within the bustling city. Reports indicate that doctors have been served with eviction notices, compelling them to vacate their current accommodations in Kumasi.

According to the leadership of the medical association, the directive to relocate has been met with staunch resistance, as it disrupts the stability of their living arrangements. Some doctors have already been handed eviction notices, prompting their colleagues to rally behind them in solidarity.

The crux of the matter lies in the alleged sale of their bungalows to private developers, a move vehemently contested by the medical fraternity. The association’s leadership contends that agreements made with Manhyia Palace for alternative housing arrangements have been disregarded, exacerbating tensions within the healthcare community.

Speaking on behalf of the aggrieved doctors, a spokesperson highlighted the importance of honoring agreements made prior to the land’s handover. The failure to adhere to these commitments has not only sparked discontent among medical staff but has also undermined trust in the hospital’s administration.

The implications of the strike are far-reaching, with concerns mounting over its impact on patient care and medical services. With doctors withdrawing their services indefinitely, the hospital faces the daunting challenge of maintaining its standard of care amidst the ongoing dispute.

Dr. Paa Kwasi Baidoo, the Ashanti Regional President of the Ghana Medical Association, expressed disappointment at the sudden movement of hospital staff from their homes in an interview with Citi News. However, it is evident that swift action is needed to address the grievances of the medical staff and restore normalcy to operations at KATH.

As negotiations between the medical association and relevant stakeholders intensify, the fate of the strike and its resolution remain uncertain.
