In an interview on AIT TV’s Big Xclusive show, renowned Ghanaian musician Guru NKZ opened up about his journey in the music industry, shedding light on the challenges he faced regarding awards and his ultimate decision to prioritize his fans over accolades.
Despite numerous nominations, Guru NKZ has found himself on the sidelines when it comes to receiving awards, sparking speculation and frustration among fans and industry insiders alike. When asked about this recurring theme, Guru NKZ didn’t hold back, revealing a complex landscape of competition and perceived sabotage.
“A lot of people think I stepped on their toes…I realized it wasn’t fun anymore, it wasn’t like trying to sabotage me, it was completely them trying to take you out,” Guru NKZ explained, reflecting on the dynamics at play within the industry. He recounted instances where despite his prolific output and undeniable impact, he was consistently overlooked in favor of his peers.
“It became so obvious…competitors will be mocking here and there on Twitter for like several times,” Guru NKZ lamented, highlighting the frustration of being snubbed time and again despite his achievements. The disparity between his efforts and the recognition received led Guru NKZ to reassess his approach to success.
Realizing that the pursuit of awards was detracting from his true purpose as an artist, Guru NKZ made a conscious decision to shift his focus towards connecting with his fanbase on a deeper level. “I just need to forget about this whole award thing…focusing on appealing to my fans than focusing on the awards,” he affirmed, emphasizing the importance of staying true to his craft and his audience.
The musician acknowledged the outpouring of support from his fans, who rallied behind him in the face of perceived injustice. “They started sympathizing with the brand Guru cause they realized, no, this is too much now it is too much,” Guru NKZ recalled, noting the solidarity that emerged within his fan community.
As Guru NKZ reflected on his journey, he imparted a valuable lesson to aspiring artists and industry newcomers. “There should always be a plan B…always expecting greatness ahead of you and always focusing on whatever you wish to achieve,” he advised, underscoring the resilience and determination required to navigate the unpredictable terrain of the music industry.
