Clarity on LGBTQ+ Bill: Bawumia’s Silence Raises Questions

Reported by Ngresangma Martha-14/04/2024

Advocates for Christ Ghana Chairman, Edem Senanu, welcomes Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent stance against LGBTQ+ practices in Ghana. However, Senanu suggests that Bawumia missed an opportunity to provide clarity by remaining silent on the pending anti-gay bill.

In his Eid message, Bawumia expressed his opposition to same-sex marriage, aligning with Ghanaian cultural values and his Muslim faith. While his statement was welcomed, Senanu believes Bawumia could have gone further to address the anti-gay bill, which awaits presidential approval to become law.

Senanu emphasizes the importance of leaders like Bawumia taking a clear stance on such matters, especially given his position as a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics. He suggests that Bawumia’s silence on the bill has created a sense of ambiguity, leaving citizens unsure of where he stands on the issue.

Additionally, Senanu expresses disappointment in Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo for not providing updates on the pending case against the anti-LGBTQ+ bill in the courts. He believes that given the public interest in the matter, the judiciary should be transparent about the actions being taken.

Overall, Senanu highlights the need for transparency and clear communication from both political and judicial leaders regarding important social issues like LGBTQ+ rights and legislation. Bawumia’s recent statement is seen as a step in the right direction, but further clarification on his stance regarding the anti-gay bill is still awaited by many Ghanaians.
