UG authorities assure of accommodation improvement

Students will see modern hostel facilities spread up on the University of Ghana (UG) campus in the coming years, the Pro Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Students Affairs, Professor Gordon A. Awandare, has said.

He said the issue of accommodation remained one of the top priorities of the university now, so his outfit was working with the university council to make the conditions for leasing the school’s land more favourable to attract investors who were interested in building hostel facilities.

“We believe that this is the best university in West Africa and we need to show it by providing a good learning and accommodation experience.

“You will soon see additional new facilities in Accra because that is something the university has not really done well with over the last 10 years,” he said.

Professor Awandare gave the assurance at the inauguration of a 100-seater conference room and a refurbished television room at the Dr Hilla Limann Hall in Accra.

Known as the K. O. Ayeh Conference Room, it was established by the 2021/2022 JCR administration to improve the welfare of residents of the hall.

He commended the executive council of the Junior Common Room (JCR) at the hall for such an initiative and stated that it would help improve students’ experience on campus.

“I am happy about this initiative because the school shares the vision of improving students’ experience over the next few years so all the initiatives that we are rolling out are geared towards that. The hope is that after students complete, they would also come and support and improve the school’s environment,” Professor Awandare said.

The President of the JCR at the hall, Albert Nii Noi Okwei, explained that when he assumed office, the hall’s conference room was in bad shape and needed to be refurbished.

He said the project was funded with the dues paid by the residents with the aim of improving the welfare and experience of students on campus.

“The place is suitable for conferences and seminars. Students can now watch football matches such as the premier league right here on campus,” he added.
