Fatawu Hamidu gets Black Stars call-up in place of injured Baba Rahman

Medeama Sporting Club’s left-back, Fatawu Hamidu, has received a call-up to the Black Stars squad as a replacement for the injured Baba Rahman.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) did not disclose the specifics of the injury that led to the PAOK defender’s absence.

Baba Rahman, 28, commenced the match for the Black Stars and played for 69 minutes as they rallied from a goal behind to secure a 2-1 victory against the Central African Republic in their final 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Kumasi.

Despite a strong start to the season with PAOK, the former Chelsea defender faced jeers from spectators when he was substituted.

Fatawu Hamidu, aged 24, will now join the Black Stars squad in preparation for Tuesday’s international friendly against Liberia.

The ex-Accra Lions and Vision FC defender has participated in Medeama’s two CAF Champions League preliminary qualifying matches this season, as well as the Super Cup triumph over Dreams FC.

This fixture, scheduled at the Accra Sports Stadium, forms part of the groundwork for the commencement of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
