In a thought-provoking interview on Ait TV’s School of Life show, Rev Simpe Bediako, from High City Church, delved into the critical issue of divine transformation, particularly focusing on the detrimental effects of parental absence on children’s upbringing.
Rev Bediako emphasized the concerning trend of parents sacrificing essential family time due to work commitments, leading to adverse consequences on their children’s development. He challenged the prevalent notion that excessive work hours are solely driven by financial necessity, revealing a deeper root cause – an insatiable desire for an elevated standard of living.
“It is not true that I work extra because I need money to come take care of the family. We have expanded our taste, and that is why the money we earn is not enough to take care of the family. We keep killing ourselves,” Rev Bediako lamented.
The reverend highlighted the paradox of parents striving to advance their careers while inadvertently neglecting their parental duties, leaving their children vulnerable to negative influences. He stressed the indispensable role of both parents in shaping children’s character, expressing concern over the absence of a father figure to instill discipline and guidance.
“When the mum is the only one at home and the dad is away, it is sometimes difficult to straighten up the child because they need a father figure to be strict to curb their behavior,” Rev Bediako remarked.
In response to a query about advice for the youth regarding friendship, Rev Bediako emphasized the importance of discernment. He noted that while compatibility often drives friendships, aligning with individuals who share similar values and aspirations is paramount.
“People mostly make friends based on compatibility and not vision,” Rev Bediako observed. He cautioned against prioritizing peers who merely echo one’s sentiments, citing the danger of parental disconnection leading youth to seek validation from peers.
