Bulawayo — In March 2023, more than 600 people died in Malawi after Tropical Cyclone Freddy dumped heavy rain, flooding the southern part of the country, displacing over half a million people, and damaging property and livelihoods. The Malawi calamity is a stark example of “loss and damage” – the negative impacts of human-caused climate change that is affecting many parts of Africa. Nairobi, Kenya — “Climate change receives inadequate media coverage and is typically only reported following conferences, events, or disasters,” said journalism lecturer Enoch Sithole observed during the release of his climate journalism study in Nairobi, Kenya. Sithole, who also spent the past 18 months researching climate journalism for his doctoral thesis, said that South Africa’s media coverage, in general, tends to focus on controversies, as this is what editors believe sells. Resource Geoelogical Survey
The Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GGSA) has called on the government to resource the National Seismic Observatory with modern equipment to enable it to deliver real-time information on earthquakes. According to the acting Director-General of the GGSA, Isaac K. Wear nose mask
The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMA) has advised that people allergic to dust should wear nose masks following a surge in dry and dusty atmospheric conditions in Ghana. Ghana has been experiencing variations in intensity of the dry and dusty conditions over the past weeks. The GMA in a third harmattan advisory statement on Monday, February 20, 2023, explained that on Wednesday, February 15, 2023, meteorological satellites detected dust lifted around Chad, Sudan, and Niger. Time to act
The World Bank has supported the country with over $4.8 million for reducing deforestation and forest degradation emissions, commonly known as REDD+. The World Bank Trust Fund paid the money as a reward for the effort of the country in reducing 972,456 tonnes of carbon emissions under the first monitoring period of the programme, which ran from June to December 2019. Ghana, thus, becomes the second African country, after Mozambique, to receive the money from the global fund.
